Wanted: ASNT Student and Young NDT Career Members for e-Mentoring Program

Couldn’t you benefit from the support and advice of an NDT professional who has the experience and expertise to help you along the way? ASNT is launching an e-Mentoring program to encourage and support you in this important stage of your NDT career path.

The program will match you with an ASNT member who has experience in the type of NDT you are interested in pursuing. Members volunteering to be mentors will share their NDT career and industry experience, knowledge and advice.

This is your invitation to request a mentor for the 2009-2010 program year which starts this September. As an ASNT student or young professional member age 18 – 30, we encourage you to join the e-Mentoring program.

Why become an e-Mentee?

As a mentee, you can be in the unique position to get the advice from an NDT professional who works in an industry you are interested in and perhaps the type of job you hope to have some day. You’ll benefit by being linked to an individual who can provide encouragement, direction and feedback. The experience will help you establish contacts and networking opportunities, develop professional communication skills and enhance self-confidence. This e-mentoring relationship could be a significant step in helping you reach your career potential, find the right niche in the industry, and gain insight from your mentor’s professional experiences.

About ASNT e-Mentoring

Accessible to ASNT members only, e-mentoring simply requires an e-mail address. By using electronic communication, you have the opportunity to communicate with your mentor anywhere in the world. ASNT will match you with a mentor based on the information you provide about yourself. While we encourage electronic communication, if you and your mentor agree, you are welcome to meet by phone or in person.

What’s Required of an ASNT Mentee?

As a mentee in this program you may be a student deciding if nondestructive testing is a fit for you, a student close to graduation trying to find and understand real world opportunities in the industry, a young professional in the first years of your career seeking guidance on navigating the workplace, or a more experienced young professional looking for advice on making career path choices. Each mentee experience is unique to the individual needs of the mentee and the effort made by both parties.

You are eligible to participate as an e-Mentee if you are:

• Willing to e-mail and exchange messages regularly.

• Willing to make a one year commitment to the mentoring relationship.

• An ASNT member age 18 to 30.

• Willing to check your e-mail more than once a week.

• Willing to receive constructive feedback that encourages rather than criticizes.

• Willing to be open and accepting of ideas and points of view that may differ from your own.

• Respectful that the mentor may have ideas different from your own.
