Greater Houston
HOUSTON, TEXAS
Section Chair Dwayne Witter and his wife, Bonnie, presided over the
annual family day celebration on 12 June to commemorate the end of another
successful year. The Greater Houston Section hosted 75 members and guests
for a private, three-hour lunch cruise aboard the Spirit of Texas paddlewheeler
on Clear Lake in Seabrook, Texas. Attendees boarded at noon and enjoyed
an afternoon of barbecue and drinks.
Two covered decks provided ample room to mingle and explore. Lunch
was served on the air-conditioned upper deck. Everybody at the event
received a souvenir Section baseball bap. Ron Hayden and Deal Moore
orchestrated the event, which was sponsored by NOV Tuboscope.

Greater Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
The Greater Los Angeles Section hosted their annual sweetheart’s
night on 5 June. Eighty-eight members and guests attended the event
dressed in their cowboy hats and boots, as this year’s theme was
country and western night. The event featured square dancing, line dancing,
a mechanical bull, a western style shootout and a barbecue. Each attendee
received a raffle prize and there was a contest for best dressed male
and female.
Following the festivities was the annual installation of new Section
officers. Among the new officers inducted were Joshua Jones, chair;
Dan Guerrero, vice chair; and Mike Gee, treasurer. It was also announced
that this was the first time for the Section that a husband and wife
served back-to-back as Section chairs. Jones will be taking over for
his wife and outgoing Chair Kristy Davis-Jones.

Nigeria
WARRI, NIGERIA
During the 29 May meeting of the Nigeria Section, attendees prepared
for the election that ushered in the 2010 – 2011 Section officers.
After the validation of interested officer candidates was announced,
the Electoral Committee Chair, Julius Aroyehun, assured all members
of free and fair exercise. At the end of the election, the following
members were chosen to run the affairs of the Section in the upcoming
year: Henry N. Chimezie, chair; Edafe Office Omamemo, vice chair; Ajibola
K. Afolabi, secretary; and Abiri Theophilus Oke, treasurer.
Chimezie promised to work for the success of the Section, along with
the support of the members and his fellow elected executives. As a part
of this effort, the Section plans to operate with an open door policy
in which every creative idea will count.
Saudi Arabian
DHAHRAN, SAUDI ARABIA
The Saudi Arabian Section held a meeting and annual Section overview
on 21 July at the Carlton al Moaibed in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia. The
event was attended by 139 members and nonmembers, including guests and
was sponsored by the Section.
Section Chair Mohammad A. Al Salih inaugurated the meeting with announcements,
including a reminder about the upcoming ASNT NDT Level III exam that
will take place 27–28 November at the Dhahran Palace Hotel in
Dhahran. The main topics of the evening were the annual meeting for
the 2009 – 2010 fiscal year and the Section’s recent achievements.
Al Salih also encouraged members to actively participate in future meetings
and other Section activities.
As part of the night’s proceedings, members and companies were
honored for their support and participation. Nabil K. Al Dabal, the
inspection department manager at Saudi Aramco, was given an appreciation
award for his dedication to the Section. Dabal was then asked to present
appreciation awards to the five NDT companies who sponsored the Section’s
technical meetings over the last fiscal year. The companies included
the following: Rawabi Industrial Support Services Co., Abdulla Fouad
Holding Co., Saudi Pioneers for Specialized Services, Gulf Quality Control
Ltd. and Rosen International. Section officers and board members were
also presented with awards for their service, which was followed by
the announcement of those members who had the best overall meeting attendance.
As a token of appreciation, the top 10 were given two free ASNT memberships.
After the award ceremony, members retired to a buffet dinner.

St. Louis
ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI
Eleven members and guests of the St. Louis Section attended a technical
presentation and meeting on 23 June at Geotechnology, Inc. in Maryland
Heights, Maryland. The featured speaker, Obdulia Ley from the Physical
Acoustics Corporation, a member of Mistras Group, Inc., discussed her
work in line scanning thermography (LST) in which the heat source and
camera move in tandem at controlled speeds. The potential for successful
LST utilization includes such industry sectors as aerospace, automotive,
power generation and industrial process control. Ley concluded her presentation
by describing the application of LST techniques to such specific problems
as wall thinning, paint adhesion, coating thickness and crack detection.
The event was hosted by Mistras Group, Inc. After the presentation,
Ley was awarded a commemorative Gateway Arch gift by Section Chair Greg
Saguto.
Ley is a research scientist for the Physical Acoustics Corporation,
with a B.S. in physics and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, both from
Rice University.
