The Robert B. Oliver ASNT Scholarship

Robert B. Oliver info sheet (PDF)

Robert B. Oliver application form (PDF)

This award honors and assists students who have chosen NDT as a career and are currently enrolled in an NDT program leading to an undergraduate degree, associate degree or postsecondary certificate. It memorializes ASNT Past National President, Honorary Member and Fellow Robert B. Oliver. An initial grant for the award came from the Cabot Corporation and the fund has since been supplemented by many friends of ASNT. An annual $2,500 scholarship is awarded to the student who submits the most outstanding paper about NDT research, investigation or development. The scholarship is not awarded if, in the opinion of the selection committee, there is no paper that merits the award. Announcement of the winner is made during the Fall Conference.

Background
This $2,500 scholarship is being awarded by ASNT to a student enrolled in course work related to nondestructive testing (NDT) in a program of study leading to an undergraduate degree, an associate degree or a post-secondary certificate. The scholarship is awarded to the student submitting the best original manuscript on nondestructive testing. The manuscript should develop an original concept in NDT and may be based on practical experience, laboratory work or library research. Papers may be classroom assignments for work outside NDT, such as an English class.

Because the award may be made after the completion of studies, there is no requirement that the student use the funds for school expenses. It is not necessary for an applicant to attend ASNT’s Fall Conference to be eligible for the scholarship.

The scholarship memorializes ASNT Fellow and past president Robert B. Oliver. An initial grant for the award came from the Cabot Corporation and the fund has since been supplemented by many friends of ASNT.

Application Criteria
Students applying for the scholarship must be officially enrolled in an undergraduate degree, associate degree or post-secondary certificate program which includes studies in NDT.

The deadline for receipt of the application by ASNT is February 15. The application includes a completed application form (attached) and the following materials:

  • four copies of the student’s NDT paper
  • curriculum of student, showing classroom hours of NDT course work (may attach school’s published curriculum if available)
  • transcript of grades showing all of student’s completed course work
  • letter from an instructor or school official verifying the student’s official enrollment

Manuscript Criteria

Submission of a manuscript means that it has not been printed elsewhere and that it will not be published elsewhere while under consideration by ASNT. Manuscripts from the scholarship winner will be copyrighted by ASNT and submitted for publication in Materials Evaluation, one of the Society's technical journals. No payment is made for the use of the articles.

Complimentary copies of the journal containing published manuscripts are provided to the student. Details of manuscript submission are outlined below.

  • Four copies of each manuscript are required. One must be original, complete with original illustrations and photos. The other three may be photocopies.
  • The manuscript must contain the title, author, and complete references.
  • The manuscript is limited to 5,000 words and a maximum of ten illustrations.
  • Photographs should be glossy black-and-white prints; slides cannot be accepted for black-and-white reproduction. Figure numbers and captions should not be placed directly on the photographs.
  • Photographs and line drawings, if submitted, must be original (not taken from a published source)
  • The International System of Units or SI, the approved international metric system, is preferred for all measurements. If another unit is used by the author, the paper must also include the SI equivalent in parentheses.

Judging
Manuscripts are judged during ASNT’s Spring Conference. A check and certificate will be presented to the winner at the Society’s Fall Conference. It is not necessary for an applicant to attend ASNT’s Fall Conference to be eligible for the scholarship. The Robert B. Oliver ASNT Scholarship is awarded only if, in the opinion of the selection committee, a manuscript merits the award.

The Robert B. Oliver ASNT Scholarship is judged on creativity (10 points), content (50 points), format and readability (25 points), and the student’s hands on involvement in the project (15 points).
