2009 winner Sreenivas Alampalli is the
director of the Bridge Evaluation Services Bureau at the New York State
Department of Transportation, where he has worked in various capacities
since 1990. Prior to his current position, Alampalli worked in the Transportation
Research and Development Bureau as interim director, the head of structures
research and as an engineering research specialist. He earned his Ph.D.
in civil engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1990,
and has taught at Rensselaer as well as at Union College in Schenectady.
Born in Bangalore, India, Alampalli earned his B.S. in civil engineering
from Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati before receiving his M.S.
in the same field from the Indian Institute of Technology. He also holds
an M.B.A. in management and technology from Rensselaer. A member of
ASNT since 1992, Alampalli serves as the vice chair of the Committee
on Infrastructure, which he previously chaired. A member of the ASNT
Board of Directors from 2003 to 2006, he has combined his national involvement
with the Society with local involvement, having served as chair of the
Mohawk-Hudson Section from 2003 to 2005. A Fellow of ASNT since 2005,
Alampalli has been a member of the Selection Committee and has been
deeply involved in the organization of the Structural Materials Technology
conferences. In addition to his ASNT activities, he is a Fellow of ASCE
and ISHMII, is an associate editor of the ASCE Journal of Bridge
Engineering, a member of the editorial board of Structure and
Infrastructure Engineering and is the author or co-author of more
than 250 technical publications.
2009 winner Gary R. Elder is the president
and owner of Leak Testing Specialists, in Orlando, Florida, where he
has been since 1995. Prior to this, he was the president of Gary Elder
& Associates in Fort Myers, Florida. An active ASNT member since
1976, Elder currently serves as a committee chair for the Certification
Management Council (CMC). He recently served as a member of the ASNT
Board of Directors and has been involved in various capacities with
the CMC since 1996. He was also chair of the Technical and Education
Council’s Leak Testing Committee for ten years. Elder holds ASNT
NDT Level III certification in ET, LT, MT, PT, RT, UT and VT, as well
as ACCP Professional Level III certifications in MT, PT, RT and UT.
He is a US Army veteran, and holds an M.S. in engineering management
from the Missouri University at Rolla and a B.S. in electrical engineering
from the same institution. He is the vice chair of ASTM Subcommittee
E07.08 and is a licensed professional engineer in the states of Michigan
and Florida.
2009 winner Greg A. Hudkins has been
a member of ASNT since 1987, and is involved at both the local and national
levels. After attending Ohio State University, Hudkins began working
in the nuclear NDT field as an inspector, where he was exposed to inspection
divers for the first time. Interested, Hudkins ended up working around
the world as a diver performing underwater NDT. In 1992, he joined Exxon
as a unit inspector, in which position he developed and supervised an
in-house NDT organization. He held the position of inspection group
supervisor for several years and is currently the quality support, inspection
group supervisor in Turnaround and Majors, Mechanical Division. He has
also held the ExxonMobil Materials Corrosion Inspection site representative
position in the Best Practices Network Program. Hudkins is an active
participant in the Greater Houston Section, which he served as Section
chair in 2004–2005. He is a member of the Technical and Education
Council’s Chemical and Petroleum Committee, and contributed to
the ultrasonic testing volume of the third edition of the NDT Handbook
series. Hudkins has participated in a number of ASNT conferences, including
as technical program coordinator of the 2007 ICP-IIT and as co-chair
of the ICP-IIT in 2009. He was named 2009 Mentor of the Year by the
Greater Houston Section. Hudkins has held ASNT NDT Level III certification
in MT, PT, UT and VT.
2009 winner George W. Johnson (not pictured)
is the corporate RT Level III, radiation safety officer and corporate
quality director of Capital X-ray Services in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where
he has worked since helping found the company in 1965. His professional
experience in NDT goes back to 1956, having worked for Conam, Thayer
X-ray Company and Field Inspection Services prior to the establishment
of Capital X-ray. A member of ASNT since 1964, Johnson has been very
active in the area of NDT training, with thirty years of experience
in conducting training courses in MT (Levels I and II), PT (Levels I
and II), RT (radiation safety, Levels I and II, and film interpretation)
and UT (Levels I and II). Many of these courses were conducted for the
ASNT Oklahoma Section, while others were held for various petrochemical
companies, power generator firms, steel fabricators and inspection providers.
In addition, Johnson has conducted many classes for employees of Capital
X-ray. An ASNT Fellow since 1984, Johnson served as the Oklahoma Section’s
education chair from 1974 to 1987. He holds ASNT NDT Level III and ACCP
Professional Level III certification in RT, as well as Level III certifications
through his company in MT, PT and UT. He is a US Army veteran and a
member of AWS and the Oklahoma Radiation Advisory Council.
2009 winner Ricky L. Morgan attended
Purdue University and Miami University from 1979 to 1983, immediately
following graduation from Madison High School. In 1983 Morgan joined
the US Army as an infantryman. He completed his obligation, ending his
term of service as a sergeant. Morgan enrolled at the College of Oceaneering
in March 1987 and graduated that year. He was immediately employed by
Ronald Nisbet Associates, where he started as a Level I assistant on
a pipe gaging crew in a major refinery and progressed to lead field
technician providing NDT services to a number of different industries.
In 1990 Morgan was employed by Muldoon Marine Services, where he received
his first Level III certification. Morgan has been registered deputy
inspector for the Smith-Emery Company in Los Angeles since April 1994
and has become one of the leading structural steel inspectors in the
area. He currently holds ASNT NDT Level III certification in MT, PT
and UT. He is a Certified Welding Inspector with endorsements in structural
drawings and high strength bolts through the American Welding Society
and a Certified High Strength Bolting and Structural Steel Inspector
through the International Code Council. A member of ASNT since 1987,
Morgan has been very active in the Society. He is currently the vice
president of ASNT and is a member of the SOC Awards Division and the
Business and Finance, Ground Penetrating Radar, Operations, President’s
Award Appeals, SNT-TC-1A Review, Strategic Planning, Technicians
Advisory, Technician of the Year Selection, and Ultrasonics Committees.
He has been actively involved in planning ASNT conferences on a national
level and has been active at the local level as well. Morgan has served
as an officer in the Greater Los Angeles Section, is an instructor of
ultrasonic classes at Don Bosco Technical Institute and sits on the
Student Advisory Board for Don Bosco’s Material Science Department.
He received the Technician of the Year Award from ASNT in 1998 and was
named an ASNT Fellow in 2003. Morgan is also a member of the American
Welding Society, American Institute of Steel Construction, International
Code Council and the American Legion.
